Saedi

It’s Raining! It’s Pouring! – Let’s go to the Zoo!

Saedi and Gavin earned these from the county library, during the summer reading program.

Since I was so proud of them for earning the tickets, I wanted them to be able to use them. We didn’t seem to have time to go before, and today was the last day the tickets were still good. So, even though it was raining, we went to the Pt Defiance Zoo and Aquarium today. It was pretty fun and not at all crowded. We dug out all the rain gear and brought layers in case it was cold too. Gavin would wear his rain boots every single day if I let him. Saedi and Gavin both have their own umbrellas so it’s “fun” when they get to use them. I also have a pretty nice rain cover for the jogging stroller, so we were all set.

Going to the zoo in the rain really isn’t as bad as it sounds – most of the animal viewing areas are sheltered so you just walk between them under an umbrella, and the animals were active because it wasn’t hot or cold. Plus the umbrellas make for some fun photos.

It’s not a very large zoo but it’s still pretty good. We saw meerkats,
walruses,

sea otters,
polar bears (I love how these ones turned out! The photos are taken through the glass),

(The pictures are not as nice from here on out. I didn’t charge the battery for the new camera before we went, since it was sort of a last minute trip, and it died. So the rest are with the cell phone.)
river otters,
a barn owl,
elephants,

and gibbons. The gibbons were fun. The play area that they have has swinging handles all over the building part, including right in front of the viewing windows. They kept swinging over to look at the people, like we were there for them to watch and not the other way around! I had the stroller turned slightly away from the window and it seemed that the white one kept trying to see what was in it. Solvei and Nels loved watching them too, they would smile when the “monkeys” were swinging around.
And of course there was the aquarium, too. They have a Shark photo-op spot. Saedi asked if I would take their picture.
And then they waned to do a picture that loked like they needed to be rescued.
They of course have the obligatory display of “Nemo and Dory” fish.
They have a nice collection of sea horses too. I got one picture, but the cell phone couldn’t keep up with the movement in low light.
At least the kids would hold sill long enough to get pictures.
This aquarium has the most photogenic octopuses I have ever seen.

In the playroom

We’ve been hanging out in the playroom today, playing with a few new toys, and of course all the old favorites.

Christmas Day

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

I do really like Christmas music (I have almost 3-gigabytes of just holiday music in iTunes), but Christmas is definitely not my favorite holiday. It is a lot of fun with kids though.

We got woken up, as usual, by an early morning phone call and the kids woke up as soon as they heard voices. Saedi and Gavin were so excited. The big kids had to wait until I changed diapers for the little ones, then we went down to the living room all together.

They got exactly what they asked for from Santa, so he must have decided they could be on the nice list again this year (although, for Gavin, I think it may have been a difficult decision).

Saedi got Heelys,

and Gavin got a Lightning McQueen GeoTrax “just like he saw at the store!”

All in all, everyone was happy with what they got. It was all very nice. I made cinnamon rolls for breakfast and we hung out at home all day. We had a delicious but very easy dinner – Honey Baked Ham and au gratin potatoes with Sister Schubert’s Parker House Rolls and steamed corn (everything either precooked or heat and serve).

Twas the night before Christmas…

…and all through the house you could smell cookies, 4 different kinds!

I got my domesticity on today. This is the first year I have really felt up to taking on such a daunting task. When I was working, and when Solvei and Nels were small, I never had enough time, energy or patience to make Christmas cookies. But painting Christmas cookies is one of the fond memories I have from when I was a kid, and I want my kids to have lots of memories like those. Saedi helped me make Great Grandma’s Christmas treats. She loves helping in the kitchen, and tells me so every time I let her. I made Nate’s favorite cookies, peanut-butter chocolate-chip. Saedi, Gavin and I made and painted sugar cookies. And I made chocolate sugar cookie batter but that will have to bake tomorrow (ran out of time). So now my house smells delicious!

The kids told me to leave Santa hot chocolate instead of milk with the cookies.

I even have dough made to make cinnamon rolls in the morning (mmmmm, yummy!) and ambitions to make a pumpkin roll for dessert, we’ll see if there is time for that though.

Goodie Goodie

Early Christmas present for ME (and Nate too). I got this in the mail last night with instructions to open before Christmas so I can play and be familiar with it on Christmas for best results. Yipee!!!

So here are a few of the 300+ shots I’ve taken since last night.=P

Night out with the big kids

I took Saedi and Gavin to the movies today. We went and saw Disney’s A Christmas Carol in 3D! It is so much fun to take the kids to 3D movies because they think it is so cool. Pretty good movie in my opinion, a bit creepy in parts for the kids but they held up well. Nothing’s ever too scary when you can hold mom’s hand.

Little Ditty

I have officially started listening to Christmas music. After hearing a few at our house (and a few at school) Saedi has come up with part of her own.

Old Kris Kringle, jingle jingle,
he rides on a sleigh with reindeer

Pretty good for seven, I think.

Thanks for Thanksgiving

Do a little Dance…

Play a little Wii…

Chow down tonight!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It was really easy for us this year. We didn’t have anywhere to go and just hung out at home all day. Most of the day was pretty much the same as any other day. Got up and ate breakfast, played with the kids till lunch time, after lunch all the kids took a nap, and I did the rest of the cooking while they slept. I made the pies (2 pumpkin and 1 chocolate) and the 12 layer Jell-o yesterday, so they were already done. Since it is only us and we didn’t need a large turkey, I got a turkey breast instead. Put the turkey in to cook around 11 while the kids were playing. All the rest of the food was easy stuff cause I didn’t feel much like doing everything from scratch this year – Costco special heat and serve potatoes (the gravy came with the turkey), Le Roule Cranberry Cheese with crackers, Sister Schubert’s Parker House Rolls, and Stove Top Stuffing. Super easy but still delicious and it was all done just after nap time. I know we’re weird, we actually ate Thanksgiving dinner almost at dinner time. Even better the kids actually ate with minimal arguing. Hope everyone else had as good a day as we did.

Cheeetooos!

We found the best snack food ever….Chester’s Puffcorn – Cheese flavored. I think I could eat a whole bag by myself (I haven’t yet). I found them at a local store then they disappeared. They were so good I looked them up online to see where I can get them. In the search I found this article, which pretty much sums it up. Snackin on Chester’s Puffcorn

The point of sharing this new found devotion, is to explain what the kids are eating for this installment. I got out a bowl of the Puffcorn for me to share with Solvei and Nels. After the food was gone they both tried to lick the empty bowl.=P

I also tried to get pictures of me with the kids (by myself) a few days back and I thought I’d post the best ones.
This one Saedi took.
This one I took at arms length, without being able to see what was in the frame.

Less and Less – and Too many

This is what the tooth fairy brought when she came for Saedi’s first tooth.

Well, we got another visit from the tooth fairy last night.

When we were sitting down to breakfast this morning, Saedi told me that she might be able to sing the “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” song this year.

The other afternoon, as Gavin and I were just finishing lunch, Gavin looked out the back door and said, “Look Mom, the sun is starting to go down!” I thought it was way too early, after all it was only 1:30 in the afternoon. But when I looked out the window he was right, the sun was already half way down in the sky. There is just not enough daylight now that it’s getting to be winter. It’s strange to have it be completely dark outside when I’m making dinner. I know it’s always been that way, but it’s just one of those times when it feels different because you see it from a different frame of mind.

I have a weakness for kids books. Every month Saedi brings home a book order form from school and I can’t resist. Nate gives me a hard time but I don’t feel too bad about it because Saedi reads just like Nate. She can read fast and always wants more books. She always tells me, “I can’t help it, I just like reading!” It’s not a bad thing, I’m quite proud of her, and I want her to have good material so that only makes it easier for me to buy more books. Before I placed another book order, I decided to make a list of what we had already so I wouldn’t run the risk of buying books we already had. Granted I could only work on it between interruptions, but it took me two days to get it done! Now that I am finished, I can say with absolute certainty that we have SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX!?!?! children’s books. Let me state that again, six hundred and thirty-six CHILDREN’s books. That number doesn’t even include the books from mine and Nate’s bookshelves. Oh, and I DID just place another order ;).

Solvei is the only one of my children to develop a real affinity for a binkie. Saedi took one until she was about 6 months and then was done, Gavin really only ever used them as chew toys, and Nels likes his at sleep time but usually could care less during the day. Solvei on the other hand, always wants hers. If she doesn’t have one it’s not for long, she will usually go find one. We have five of the kind she likes (we bought enough for Solvei and Nels, but Nels ended up preferring a different kind). One of the funniest things to watch is when she finds two of them. She keeps one in her mouth and carries the other one around, constantly changing between the two.

A few days ago she discovered that she can put both of them in her mouth AT THE SAME TIME! She thought it was the neatest thing ever!

So what’s better than two binkies at the same time?

Today she found three!!!
