On the road again…are we there yet?

In the age of the GPS I don’t actually get that question very much. All my kids know how to look and see if the destination is showing on the screen – if it’s not, we’re not there yet.

Day 4
2065 miles down – 450 miles to go

Hotel living isn’t so bad if it’s a hotel like we stayed at last night.

No more hotels for a little while though, because we get to Grandpa’s tonight.

On the road again…still

Day 3

On the road again

Day 2
840 miles down – 1685 more to go…

We got into the hotel REALLY late last night so we slept in a bit this morning and got started a little later than we wanted. The kids don’t mind though.

Fundatory + Road Trip

Today was the official start of our vacation! So after getting the car all packed and ready to go, there was just a little matter of mandatory fun for work first – the annual pig roast. We had a little lunch,

saw some wildlife (if only I’d brought the better camera with the telephoto lens),

and watched/played a little volleyball.

With the obligations out of the way we got on the road. Before we got too far we came upon someone who was having a REALLY bad day.

The car fire was so hot it felt like it would melt the windows when we drove passed, and emergency crews arrived the same time as us (everyone was okay).

Turns out we were taking our trip the same weekend as the Sturgis Rally – we saw a lot of this.

Building trouble

I have conflicted opinions about building toys – Legos, Tinkertoys, K’nex, Magnetix, anything where you take little things and put them together to make big things.

I love watching the kids play with them and seeing their creativity, they can make some pretty cool things.

The problems I have:  1) Having little pieces that don’t always get picked up and hurt to step on, 2) Once something awesome is built, the proud child doesn’t want anyone else to play with it….Ever.

Yes, what you made is cool, but it’s still made of [insert name of small plastic toy here] and it’s meant to be played with. If you use all of the whatever it is and expect it to stay intact, then no one else has any to play with. Not very fair for anyone else. Somehow they don’t seem to mind.

After too many arguments about he/she broke my toy or took my pieces, our solution is to take a picture so it can be taken apart and shared again.

Today Saedi went Art Deco.

Sweet Siblings

When we put the kids to bed, the little ones help sing to and tuck in the big ones. They love it and get angry if we don’t let them.

If only they always got along this well.

Sultry Summer

Summer weather has arrived.
Today was the hottest day so far, it got up to 91!  *gasp*

Don’t roll your eyes at me!

I was wearing a sweater last week because it was so cold.

No that doesn’t help my cause but it’s a drastic change.

ANYWAY, we took advantage of the “heat” and used a gift certificate for ice cream and got ice cream sandwiches from Coldstone.

Great way to beat the heat! Thanks

Happy Fourth!

Fourth of July isn’t a big holiday for us, but it is still fun with kids. I love the wonder and awe in their faces while watching fireworks or even just sparklers.

Here is a taste of our day.

Here are the details if you have the time to watch.

“Yesterday the greatest question was decided… and a greater question perhaps never was nor will be decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony, that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.” John Adams, Letter to his wife, Abigail Adams, July 3, 1776

Dentophobia

I have something to admit.

I have an irrational fear of the dentist and have never taken my kids to see one.

Lame, I know.
I am trying to get over it.

For many years we didn’t have dental insurance and I could justify not going because of that. But now, for the better health of my kids, I need to take them and should be an adult about it so I can also be a good example.

So, today was Saedi and Gavin’s first trip to the dentist (Solvei and Nels are next week).

I took the kids to a pediatric dentist with very good reviews and they loved it. Saedi got her nails painted and Gavin got to play with an iPod touch while their teeth were cleaned.

Even without professional oversight, I am proud to say that their dental health is perfect. No Cavities! Saedi and Gavin got a golden dollar from the dentist for being cavity free.

As I learned from an old neighbor, what’s the best way to celebrate cavity free? Donuts!

Good motivation to try the local “House of Donuts”, right? It was delicious.
