Snitching in sentences

In an effort to keep the kids a little less rowdy and a little more safe, there is a flat rule of no running in the house. Unfortunately it is something that needs to be reminded constantly.  Today Nels came to me very distraught and said as best he could, “Gavin…running…in…house!”

Yes, he was tattle-telling but it was the most complete sentence I think he’s used.

Dentophobia

I have something to admit.

I have an irrational fear of the dentist and have never taken my kids to see one.

Lame, I know.
I am trying to get over it.

For many years we didn’t have dental insurance and I could justify not going because of that. But now, for the better health of my kids, I need to take them and should be an adult about it so I can also be a good example.

So, today was Saedi and Gavin’s first trip to the dentist (Solvei and Nels are next week).

I took the kids to a pediatric dentist with very good reviews and they loved it. Saedi got her nails painted and Gavin got to play with an iPod touch while their teeth were cleaned.

Even without professional oversight, I am proud to say that their dental health is perfect. No Cavities! Saedi and Gavin got a golden dollar from the dentist for being cavity free.

As I learned from an old neighbor, what’s the best way to celebrate cavity free? Donuts!

Good motivation to try the local “House of Donuts”, right? It was delicious.

Plum locks

When I cut and tried to dye Gavin’s hair, I told Saedi I would color hers too if she wanted.

She did want. She is my child after all.

I decided I would do it right before the end of school, so as to not be too much of a distraction. Since field day is tomorrow, we did it tonight.

We colored just the under side. I used a semi-permanent purple (plum) without lightening her natural color, so it ended up being a very subtle change, but she was happy.

Nels’ First ‘Hawk

Gavin was VERY overdue for a haircut. When I told Nate that I was going to take him to the barber Nate asked Gavin if he wanted his hair short again or if he wanted another mo-hawk……of course he picked mo-hawk.

Since Nels was also due for a haircut, I thought I’d do matching ‘dos.

I think Nels looks a little bit like Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit in this one:

We even tried to dye Gavin’s hair blue but the product I used was very disappointing; it was supposed to be semi-permanent but it all washed out. I dyed a few drips worth of the bathroom counter more successfully than his hair. I trimmed Gavin’s mo-hawk so it really sticks up, but left Nels’ longer because I love his curls. Here he is with it done up in gel.

Toddlers not Babies

They are not babies anymore, they are toddlers because they are in toddler beds.

When we moved we decided that we wouldn’t set up the cribs at the new house. They are big enough for toddler beds so we would just move them into the new bed. We went and got toddler beds the same day we moved all the rest of the beds from the old house. We set them up that night, but I haven’t had a chance to take pictures until now. They LOVE their new beds.

*Since these pictures were taken I have had a chance to put on the stickers that came with them. Solvei’s is a Tinkerbell bed and Nels’ is a Cars bed.

My little girl is growing up!……<*sob*>

After the movie tonight, Saedi had her very first ever sleep over . She was so excited and I made sure to send her own pillow and blanket so she would hopefully be comfortable. The only thing I didn’t think of was her allergies. They have a cat and her allergies are worse at night when in a home with a cat. I have to admit it was actually nice to get a late night call because she was suddenly nervous about staying there; it sort of assured my jitters as well. After giving my permission for a dose of allergy medicine, Saedi and I got to say our traditional goodnight over the phone. She was still nervous but said she was okay to stay the night. It’s sweet to know the baby bird hasn’t flown too far from the nest.

*Post Script* Just so you know, Saedi’s sleep over ended well. She came home quite happy and said she had lots of fun.

First tricycle ride

The big kids wanted to play outside today after Saedi got home from school, so we did. After a few minutes Solvei and Nels got bored in the stroller. I got them out of the stroller and decided to get the tricycle for them to play with. It was the first time I’d ever put them on it and Nels knew what to do immediately. He pushed along with his feet and steered very well. Anytime he got near the curb or the grass, I told him to stay on the sidewalk and he would. He even tried to pedal by the end of the evening (still too short to get enough strength).

Solvei, on the other hand, had no idea of what the tricycle was for. She didn’t even stay on long enough to get a picture. She was, however, very entertained by every rock and stick she saw, and very happy when she picked them up.

I couldn’t get any good pictures of Saedi, but I got a good one of Gavin. The neighbor girl across the street brought out her badminton set and the big kids played with that while the twins went up and down the sidewalk.

Here are a few more of Solvei and Nels that are just too cute to keep to myself.

Our first ever Emergency

Not too bad to have a “first ever” on the fourth child, but I had to make a run to the ER last night.

We were hanging out in the living room after dinner, waiting for Nate to get home from work. Solvei and Nels were playing chase when Nels tried to either run away from Solvei, or just run behind the cedar chest that I have pushed towards the corner of the room, when he tripped over his own feet and fell forehead first into the corner of the wall. He got up and was dazed for a second but just rubbed his head. However, when he rubbed where he had hit, it started to bleed – a lot.

I took him to the kitchen and applied pressure with a paper towel while Saedi grabbed the first aid kit and Gavin screamed his head off. When I had successfully stopped Gavin from making the babies cry, the bleeding had mostly stopped too. I checked his eyes for sign of concussion but he seemed okay. I cleaned it and put a small band-aid on, then cleaned up the blood. Before I was done cleaning, Nels was getting up to play again -clearly not lethargic. So I looked up online to see if he might need stitches. I was still undecided when Nate walked in the door. He agreed that stitches might be warranted and since this happened at 8:30pm on a Saturday when all urgent care clinics are closed, I would be taking Nels to the ER.

I got all but Nels ready for bed before we left so Nate could eat a quick dinner. When I put Solvei to bed she was so sad. She has never gone to bed before without Nels. I think she may have thought she was in trouble.

Nels was so good. When I told him to put his coat and shoes on he got so excited. He waited patiently at the hospital, took the medicine they gave him easily, held still while they treated him and didn’t cry pretty much the whole time even though it was waaayy past his bed time (we got done just after midnight). He was all smiles when I took his picture after the doctor first looked at him.

The doctor said it was worthy of stitches, but after examination said it could probably be treated with skin glue. They numbed it, washed it,

glued it, put steri-strips on to help hold it closed while it healed, and topped it all of with a band-aid so he wouldn’t try to pick at it. This is what he looks like this morning.

So now I have earned a new “mom experience badge” and am very thankful at a time like this that we have the medical coverage we do.

Solvei’s First Haircut

Today Solvei got her 1st haircut! Her bangs were starting to go into her eyes and it was just pretty uneven all over, so I decided it was time for a trim. She was so good. We have been taking her binkie away from her during the day, so that she doesn’t HAVE to have it all the time. She whimpered a little when the stylist first put the drape on, but I brought the binkie as a secret weapon.  She was completely calm after that.
