Gebäck und Kekse

A few weeks ago, someone from Nate’s work recommended a German bakery/deli to us that is very near our new house. We went today to find it so I could have some pastries for breakfast. It’s a fun little shop but I feel like a bit of an idiot going to because I don’t speak German – maybe one day.

The pastries were definitely worth seeking out, and we will be going back. I also got some cookies for the kids (since they had already eaten breakfast). Delicious!

Gavin’s Wishes and Noses

Walking home from the bus stop this afternoon Saedi told me that Gavin calls the white dandelions…..

Wish Flowers.
I have to say I like that name much better.

I found a gigantic tub of animal crackers at Costco and bought them on a whim, because I thought they were cute and the kids would like them. They are Winnie-the-Pooh shaped.

In case you are not as intimately familiar as we are with Winnie-the-Pooh (having seen many movies/cartoons HUNDREDS of times) they are Tigger, Pooh, Piglet, Roo, Eeyore and Lumpy. Solvei and Nels LOVE them. They are quite tasty, but the reason I mention this is actually because of Gavin. He has a peculiar way of eating them.

With every cracker he eats everything but the noses and saves them for last.

Twas the night before Christmas…

…and all through the house you could smell cookies, 4 different kinds!

I got my domesticity on today. This is the first year I have really felt up to taking on such a daunting task. When I was working, and when Solvei and Nels were small, I never had enough time, energy or patience to make Christmas cookies. But painting Christmas cookies is one of the fond memories I have from when I was a kid, and I want my kids to have lots of memories like those. Saedi helped me make Great Grandma’s Christmas treats. She loves helping in the kitchen, and tells me so every time I let her. I made Nate’s favorite cookies, peanut-butter chocolate-chip. Saedi, Gavin and I made and painted sugar cookies. And I made chocolate sugar cookie batter but that will have to bake tomorrow (ran out of time). So now my house smells delicious!

The kids told me to leave Santa hot chocolate instead of milk with the cookies.

I even have dough made to make cinnamon rolls in the morning (mmmmm, yummy!) and ambitions to make a pumpkin roll for dessert, we’ll see if there is time for that though.
