Fundatory + Road Trip

Today was the official start of our vacation! So after getting the car all packed and ready to go, there was just a little matter of mandatory fun for work first – the annual pig roast. We had a little lunch,

saw some wildlife (if only I’d brought the better camera with the telephoto lens),

and watched/played a little volleyball.

With the obligations out of the way we got on the road. Before we got too far we came upon someone who was having a REALLY bad day.

The car fire was so hot it felt like it would melt the windows when we drove passed, and emergency crews arrived the same time as us (everyone was okay).

Turns out we were taking our trip the same weekend as the Sturgis Rally – we saw a lot of this.

Building trouble

I have conflicted opinions about building toys – Legos, Tinkertoys, K’nex, Magnetix, anything where you take little things and put them together to make big things.

I love watching the kids play with them and seeing their creativity, they can make some pretty cool things.

The problems I have:  1) Having little pieces that don’t always get picked up and hurt to step on, 2) Once something awesome is built, the proud child doesn’t want anyone else to play with it….Ever.

Yes, what you made is cool, but it’s still made of [insert name of small plastic toy here] and it’s meant to be played with. If you use all of the whatever it is and expect it to stay intact, then no one else has any to play with. Not very fair for anyone else. Somehow they don’t seem to mind.

After too many arguments about he/she broke my toy or took my pieces, our solution is to take a picture so it can be taken apart and shared again.

Today Saedi went Art Deco.

Better than mice

I’m sorry if my posts about our wildlife are boring to you, but I grew up in a place where the only critters you would find were sand puppies, spiders and maybe some field mice, so having real wildlife living in my backyard fascinates me. Every. time. And I’m going to share.

We got a suet feeder and the birds that have started to come around are amazing. Here are a few that I was able to actually take pictures of.

The last one is one of our baby barn swallows, they’re only flight feathers now – no more down.

We found this sort of strange looking one too that was really hard to photograph, every time I got out the camera it would fly away, but I captured it eventually.

I think this next one may be the female version of the last one.

We’ve also had a few more visits from this little family.

No! Your own beds!

Silly kids.

Details

What is wrong with this picture?

You might have to look really close to be able to tell, but I noticed as soon as I got them up from nap this afternoon.

Nels and Solvei are on the wrong beds and if you look a close you will see that they swapped the pillows and blankets too.

We’ve been here before

Another bad thing about having to go to the ER for stitches/staples is having to go back to the ER to get them out. Today was that day, but at least it wasn’t quite as busy as the day we were here before. Nels is now officially better.

I think he got more upset getting the staples out than he did getting them put in…but that didn’t last too long.

It was still a tiring day.

And of course, because there was pictures being taken Solvei wanted to be a part.

Proof of Present

After we got back from our trip to Utah for the twins’ birthday, they got another present that I had to put together. And since it took forever to get to Saedi’s, here is proof that I did get it done. 🙂

Nels did get to ride it too, he just wouldn’t cooperate for the camera. Thank you for the gift!

Flying practice

Our little birds are already out of the nest and learning to fly. Thank goodness it’s not my REAL kids yet.

Actually, the little birds are almost too big for their nest now.

Dressing up

When I got the kids dressed today I put Solvei in one of the dresses I loved on Saedi. Nels picked his own clothes and ended up in “dress clothes” too. So I decided to take pictures.

Of course Nels wanted to argue with me about having his glasses on. I didn’t want them, but he would only scream at me if he didn’t have them. This time he won.

They both had to show me their latest tattoos.

They are especially cute when they are nice to each other.
