Just needed something to cuddle

Today at nap time Nels didn’t want to go to sleep because of how sick he was. Things were quiet for about an hour but he started screaming and didn’t stop. This behavior is not like him so I went in after he’d been wailing for about 15 minutes, after I was sure he wouldn’t settle down, because I didn’t want him to wake Solvei (if she was asleep at all). He was sitting up in bed looking very pitiful and I was sure he hadn’t slept at all.

I got him to lay back down but he was so sad, every time I would go to leave the room, his face would scrunch, his bottom lip would tremble and his eyes would tear-up. So I stayed with him for a few minutes until he was fully calmed down and fighting sleep with all he could. He was still sad when I would try to leave, so I got him his teddy bear to cuddle and he was okay after that.

After he finally went to sleep, I went back in to get Solvei, since she was now awake and I didn’t want her to wake him. This is how he had fallen asleep.

Polar opposites

Nels has come down with something. He is just a “grumpy gus” – looks and acts sick. Because he’s not feeling well he doesn’t want to eat; because he doesn’t want to eat, he doesn’t chew his food well enough, he then chokes and throws up (which I’m sure he already has a tendency towards because he doesn’t feel well). Solid foods of any kind are not his friend right now, so he’s eating very little and all he wants is milk.

Solvei, on the other hand, must be going through a growth spurt. She is all smiles, is so happy to get food, and is wanting almost twice as much food as usual. When I dish up the usual amounts of food for both twins, Solvei’s is gone before Nels has had much, if any, and she screams because she wants more.

At least Nels’ food doesn’t go to waste; whatever he hasn’t eaten, she usually will.

Nearly there

When Nate got his new truck there were a few aftermarket upgrades that we talked about him getting from the get-go. We have found ourselves in a position (thanks to a little unexpected back-pay) to be able to get about half of them installed this last month. So here it is after new step-bars, spray-in-bed-liner/undercoat, and tonneau cover.

Pretty isn’t it?

It’s March 17th, so we must be Irish today

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
I got a wild hair. I should have just ignored it, but I didn’t……I’m glad I didn’t.
It all started when I found some very cute St. Patrick’s Day hair things for $1 each at Big Lots. As the holiday got closer I started thinking what clothes the kids could wear that were green. Looking through the laundry I would find something that could work, that was sort of green, or that had a bit of green on it. None of them really had anything that was what I thought to be green enough for St Patrick’s Day. I would have to get something I guess.
There is another blog that I read occasionally, and the girl who writes it always does the cutest crafty things. Recently she’s made a few different shirts for her girls and I started thinking that I could probably do something like that. Then somehow, buying shirts and decorating them, turned into also making skirts for the girls (maybe some sort of layered tutu type skirt made with green tulle?? what I found was better – sheer with glitter shamrocks). I was feeling really crafty now. Unfortunately, by the time I’d decided to really do this, I only had 2 days to get it done and a few other errands to run in that time.
It probably should have been a sign that this might be too big an undertaking when I had to go to three different stores to buy all the things I needed to make what I wanted. I kept with the idea though. Which is why I spent all of nap time, part of the evening, all of the after-bedtime-me-time and until the wee hours of the night on the 16th making fun outfits. My sewing machine is covered in green glitter (as is most of my house now I’m sure) and I am really tired but they turned out really well and I am glad I did it.
Don’t they look just cute? Nels has learned “cheese” from Gavin and Saedi. Every time I got the camera out today, which was often, Nels said “cheese.”
After Saedi came home from school I got a few great ones of them all together; this one’s the best.
Having taken pictures of all the kids I decided I wouldn’t mind one of me too. I was showing Saedi how to use the camera (hold it like this, look through here, push the button half way to focus and hold it, then press harder to take the picture) and we ended up with this one.
This is the one she took.
I wanted to do something fun for dinner as well, without being too ambitious. I wanted to make something the kids would like and eat quickly, that wouldn’t be too involved to cook, and that I could color green. The kids don’t really like eggs so Green Eggs & Ham were out. I decided that pancakes would work fabulously and, since Nate was out of town, no one would mind if I made breakfast for dinner. So here are my first ever green pancakes.
I even made one for each of us with chocolate chips for dessert!
Sláinte!

Up, Up and Away!

Superheroes are great, and I happen to be the mother of three.

Gavin brought me one of his blankets today to tie around his neck, so that he could play superheroes. As soon as Solvei and Nels saw him wearing his blanket, they each brought me one to put on them.

My little girl is growing up!……<*sob*>

After the movie tonight, Saedi had her very first ever sleep over . She was so excited and I made sure to send her own pillow and blanket so she would hopefully be comfortable. The only thing I didn’t think of was her allergies. They have a cat and her allergies are worse at night when in a home with a cat. I have to admit it was actually nice to get a late night call because she was suddenly nervous about staying there; it sort of assured my jitters as well. After giving my permission for a dose of allergy medicine, Saedi and I got to say our traditional goodnight over the phone. She was still nervous but said she was okay to stay the night. It’s sweet to know the baby bird hasn’t flown too far from the nest.

*Post Script* Just so you know, Saedi’s sleep over ended well. She came home quite happy and said she had lots of fun.

You are about to be squashed by a giant corn

Saedi’s school had a family movie night today and we decided to go. They showed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Actually Saedi got invited to go with the neighbors, so I brought Gavin, Solvei and Nels and we sat all together. The kids had a lot of fun.

Cursed by matzo balls

A few days ago I made Matzo Ball Soup for dinner. It was a new recipe idea and I didn’t know if it would be very good because some of the individual ingredients didn’t smell very good going in. As it turned out it was VERY good; absolutely delicious actually, a great comfort food. It was so good in fact that Nate made the casual comment that this is the soup he would want made for him if he were sick, and I couldn’t have agreed more. It made quite a lot so I saved the leftovers for lunch. Little did I know that having those leftovers in the fridge would be my doom.

Having been hit hard last night with the flu, I am grateful that I was able to have Matzo Ball Soup for lunch today.

Shush!

Solvei is starting to be very cranky if she doesn’t get to sleep when she’s tired, and she doesn’t like to sleep in the car. When she gets cranky in her car seat she squirms and whines/wails, like she’s uncomfortable.

We went out to run a few errands this morning and by the time we finished it was just after lunch time and right at nap time. Before we could make it home Solvei started wailing in the back seat. I tell her “it’s okay”, “we’ll be home in a minute”, give her her blanket, give her a toy, whatever I can with what’s in the car to keep her from getting too mad. Nothing really helped and she just sounded grumpy and pathetic. We were nearly home so I quit trying to console her.

After a few minutes, one of the times that Solvei whimpers, we hear Nels shush her! And for the rest of the ride home, every time she whined, he would shush her. I couldn’t help but crack up. With one of the shushes I looked back and he even had his finger up to his mouth!

So nice

I love it when I’m busy doing things and I can walk into the playroom to find the kids playing so nicely together.

Much more pleasant than the screaming, yelling, whining, bossing, etc. that happens when I try to make dinner many nights.
